Campbelltown Catholic Club – Outdoor Gaming Area

The refurbishment of an outdoor gaming lounge for Campbelltown Catholic Club called for design ingenuity to resolve an issue of airflow.

Founded to support Catholic education, sport and culture in Macarthur, Campbelltown Catholic Club views the community as an ‘extended family’.

The ever-popular Camden Road venue engaged the 110-year-old design and construction company to refurbish the outdoor gaming lounge. The problem to solve – unwelcome winds entering through the open space of the lounge and disrupting patron comfort.

Innovation

Paynter Dixon’s design team proposed a slatted steel and aluminum framed awning with special properties as a wind break. Importantly, the structure preserves the open space requirements of an outdoor gaming lounge as mandated in NSW.

The overhead awning consists of aluminium batons which curtail the downflow, with vertically positioned oversized large glass blade spans to moderate lateral circulation.

Mirror-film transfers on the glass blades also introduce an appealing visual dynamic by reflecting the surrounding space, and adjacent landscaped design wall gardens.

The existing garden and planter beds were temporarily emptied to enable installation of the awning.

Overcoming challenges

Work was undertaken in a fully operational club, requiring intricate materials handling and safety measures. During the installation of structural steel, roller shutters on the building were deployed in sections to separate the work front.

A mobile crane truck – strategically positioned in the club car park alongside an exterior wall – hoisted heavy materials up and over the wall. The proximity of activity to the venue’s main entrance also required a detailed traffic management plan to carefully regulate the flow of vehicles and pedestrians with safety assured.

“Campbelltown Catholic Club provides an invaluable social and entertainment hub for the region,” says Andrew Neagle, who is the Strategic Development Lead of Hospitality for Paynter Dixon. “The comfort of patrons in the outdoor gaming area is a clear priority of the Club, and Paynter Dixon welcomes the opportunity to support this innovative design solution.”

Paynter Dixon recently oversaw the refurbishment of the Campbelltown Bowling Club, which sits within the Campbelltown Catholic Club Group, on the eve of its 100-year anniversary.
