CODA tower crane dismantled
Visible from miles around, the CODA tower crane marked the highest point in Coffs Harbour for 18 months.
Within the space of 24 hours, the frame structure was dismantled and consigned to memory.
The crane had performed admirably in handling materials for the 13-storey, mixed-use building.
Located in the CBD, the crane was removed in sections with assistance from a 400 tonne mobile crane and 40 tonne Franna crane for dual lifts.
A feat of engineering, planning, teamwork, determination – and above all – safety.
Sequence of key steps
- Dismantling of the jib and removal of counterweights simultaneously
- Removal of the A frame, platform, and cabin
- Installation of temporary platforms
- Removal of crane in 3 stages
Additional equipment and actions
- 12 semi-trailers transported all segments of the tower crane
- 3 additional semi-trailers transported the mobile crane, including counterweights and the jib
- The mobile crane had a maximum reach of 73 metres
- Local council provided a permit to close the adjoining street for 3 days
- A Geotech study determined the weight-bearing capacity of the street, and hence, suitability for supporting the mobile crane.
- Paynter Dixon conducted a tool box with the entire crew on Thursday 21 at 5:30 am to ensure all safety procedures were in line
