Hannah completes apprenticeship with flying colours
What a difference three years can make. Hannah Ipsen is the first to admit her apprenticeship in carpentry has bolstered self-confidence.
“Before my apprenticeship, I was worried that I wouldn’t be strong enough to overcome certain challenges,” says Hannah. “But our site teams are always supportive and that has made a huge difference.”
Today, Hannah has transitioned to Leading Hand in our construction team delivering Macarthur Memorial Park in south-west Sydney.
“I manage labourers and trades on site, in addition to delivering the new café and supporting works on the Chapel.”
Once completed, the 113-hectare parkland destination will accommodate 136,000 burial plots over the coming 100 years.
“It’s good to have the responsibility of delivering a building on site while still being supported by Brogan [Site Manager] and the team.”
“My confidence is so much better now. Knowing more people in the company certainly helps, but the opportunities for public speaking have played a big role too.”
Hannah was named ‘First Year – Apprentice of the Year’ at the 2022 Master Builders Association Excellence in State Awards.
Public speaking opportunities followed, from an MBA-hosted industry panel for Women’s International Day, to guest presenting at her former high school.
“I want to see more girls exploring a career in construction.”
The avid surfer worked in student support services and after-school care on the Central Coast prior to entering construction.
As a mature-age student (over the age of 21), Hannah was eligible for the MBA’s accelerated adult commencement training program. The two-week bridging course allowed her to complete an apprenticeship with host employer Paynter Dixon in three years.
Hannah’s CV already lists a range of diverse projects, including Club Parramatta Car Park, Liverpool Cemetery, and the Polish Club in Ashfield.
Future goals? “I would like to work towards becoming a site supervisor. The company also runs a leadership training program which I’m interested in completing.”
The surfer is thoughtful. “I’m enjoying the deeper water.”
