Paynter Dixon has been appointed by The Mater Private Hospital to oversee design finalisation and construction of a new state-of-the-art Palliative Care Facility and modernised Day Surgery Unit.

Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1906 as a hospital for women and children, today, the Mater is part of St Vincent’s Health Australia, one of Australia’s leading Catholic not-for-profit healthcare providers.

The development will be co-located next to the main Hospital building in North Sydney, marking a watershed moment in the Mater’s rich history.

“For the first time our Hospital will be able to provide birth to end-stage patient care, with terminally ill patients no longer needing to be referred elsewhere for their care. At the same time, we’re galvanising our status as one of the busiest surgical private hospitals in the country,” said Mater CEO Annette Czerkesow, as reported by the Catholic Weekly.

The project is divided into four major components:

• Palliative Care Facility and landscaped terrace on level 1
• Day Surgery Unit on level 2, including refurbishment of the existing building
• Underground extension to the existing car park
• Two-storey building containing consulting suites and executive offices.

Palliative Care Facility

The new development will create a 12-bed unit with supportive services, consulting rooms and landscaped terrace. This will enable the Mater to support the North Shore community’s need for holistic end-of-life Palliative Care services.

Significantly, the new facility will also become a leading research and teaching Centre, advancing and improving practices in palliative care.

Day Surgery Unit

The new wing will house an expanded and upgraded Day Surgery Unit. This will include two additional Endoscopy suites, which will not only improve patient flow and experience in the Hospital, but ensure the Hospital stands ready to support the evolution of medical procedures that are increasingly being offered as day surgery admissions.

The development has been enabled by the vision and extraordinary philanthropic support from the Friends of the Mater Foundation who have committed $18.5 million to the project.

Paynter Dixon has delivered numerus projects for St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney in Darlinghurst including the construction of a new hybrid theatre, the refurbishment of an endoscopy suite, and the refurbishment of seven operating theatres.

Project works for The Mater Private Hospital are due for completion in 2024.
